Obituary for Dorothy M. Emig

Dorothy M. Emig of Saline, formerly of South Lyon and Birmingham, Michigan, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 21, 2021. She was born on October 4, 1923 to her parents, Earl and Bridget O’Brien Kelly, in Spragge, Ontario, Canada, a small lumbering town, nestled among the hills on Georgian Bay. When Dorothy was a young child, the family moved to Detroit, and she spent the rest of her life as a Michigander. Dorothy married the love of her life, Ralph Emig, on August 31, 1946. They were married for 65 years, until Ralph’s passing in March of 2012. Dorothy is survived by their five children - Tom (Diane) Emig, Nancy (Phil) LaDuke, Mary (Don) Nelson, Joyce (Mike) Areddy and Paul (Angela) Emig, as well as her brother, Jack (Barbara) Kelly. She was also the proud grandma of 13 grandchildren: Jeff, Jaclyn, Katy, Kelly, Michelle, Mike, Patrick, Steven, Nick, Kristen, Laura, Shawn, and Austin. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren. Dorothy’s parents and her sister, Eleanor (John) Basanese preceded her in death. Dorothy and Ralph bought a cottage on Lake St. Clair in Stoney Point, Ontario, Canada in 1954, and it remained a focal point of their family life for the rest of their lives. The family spent every summer at the cottage, and they continue to marvel at the way Dorothy could feed and host huge crowds of people at that little, tiny cottage, making it look easy. For years, Dorothy would gamely go waterskiing once each summer, just to satisfy her kids who constantly urged her to do so. Her conditions were that it had to be extremely hot outside, and the water had to be calm as glass! Dorothy loved traveling, she was an avid bridge player, she enjoyed being a snowbird down in Florida during the winter months, she was an amazing grandma, and being the good sport that she was, she took up snow skiing in her 50’s. There is legendary story still going around about the time she forgot to get off a chairlift in Vermont and had to climb down onto the lift operator’s shoulders! Dorothy was such a generous and giving person, and throughout her life, she gave of herself to make life easier for others. She was friendly and easygoing, and would become friends with everyone she met. Her children used to tease her that she would have to add the woman she met in line at the grocery store to her Christmas card list! Dorothy had a delightful sense of humor, laughing frequently. The person she used to laugh at the most was herself, sometimes bringing herself to tears from laughing so hard. Dorothy’s patience was endless and she seemed to thrive amidst the chaos created by multiple grandchildren all gathering at one time in their little cottage on the lake. If everyone wanted to continue waterskiing until 9:00 pm, then she was content with holding dinner until after the sun set. Her only stipulation - if you were still in your wet swimsuit, you had to sit on a plastic chair, not a wooden one! She spent her final years receiving tender care at the Ester Guest Home in Saline. Dorothy’s passing is leaving a huge void in the lives of those who loved her, but there is peace in knowing that she is reunited once again with her dear husband, Ralph. She will be forever remembered as the loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandma, aunt and friend that she was. Rest In Peace, Dorothy!
