Obituary for Reverend George Tiefel Jr.

George Tiefel Jr., age 89, was called home by the Lord on November 17, 2020. He was born June 3, 1931 in Norfolk, Nebraska, son of the late Reverend George Sr. and Pauline Tiefel. On June 21, 1931, George was baptized by his father at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hader, Nebraska.When George was 6 years old, his father was called to serve a church in Stambaugh, Michigan. George attended school in Stambaugh until 10th grade. His junior and senior years were spent at Dr. Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minnesota. Following graduation, George attended North Western Lutheran College in Watertown, Wisconsin. Immediately after college, George spent a year at a seminary in Germany where could be found riding his Triumph motorcycle through the German countryside and other parts of Europe. After he attended Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin, George tutored at North Western Lutheran Academy in South Dakota. His first appointment as Pastor was Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bonesteel, South Dakota where Pastor George Tiefel was ordained. He met his beloved wife, Marian through his sister and he and Marian were joined in marriage in 1962. In 1964, Pastor George and Marian moved to South Lyon, Michigan, where he became Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He remained Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran for 41 years prior to his retirement in 2005. 29 years of that was also spent as Chaplain for the Martin Lutheran Home, currently South Lyon Senior Care and Rehab. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marian of 59 years; his two sons, Michael (Tamara) Tiefel, and Andrew (Alexandra) Tiefel; his grandchildren: Lily, Zachary, Mallory, Ian (Madeline Byle), Taylor, and Gwendolyn, Rosalyn. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Grace; his brother, Paul Tiefel; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Ann and Arnold Brown, Eleanor Dodd, and Rebecca Long. He is also survived by a very large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 20 from 4:00PM-8:00PM at PHILLIPS FUNERAL HOME, 122 W. Lake Street, South Lyon. A funeral service will be held for invited guests on Saturday, November 21 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, South Lyon. Please contact the Tiefel family for further information regarding the funeral service. Pastor Tiefel will be laid to rest in South Lyon Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 330 E. Liberty Street, South Lyon, Michigan 48178.
