Obituary for Nkululeko Mombera Osayande

Nkululeko M. Osayande, also known to most as, Don Thompson, age 73, passed away, Saturday, September 12, 2020. He was born January 1, 1947, in Mobile, Alabama. He was the son of the late Charlie and Saluda Thompson. As a child, Don loved to fish and spend time outdoors, by the water.
Don attended Dunbar Elementary school and Central High school in Mobile but soon after graduating left to attend Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was there where he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, by the way of the Beta Phi Chapter. Don moved to Michigan where he completed his graduate studies at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. From early on, Don felt passionately about educating children in the city of Detroit. This drive led him to first becoming an educator and assistant principal, for over thirty years. After earning his Doctorate degree from Wayne State University, in the area of Educational Leadership; he then became principal at Vernor Elementary and Hope Academy, in Detroit. He inspired youth in the city of Detroit for 36 years. As much as Don loved teaching, he also enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing.
Don is survived by his beloved and devoted wife Elaine; his children: Ahmed (Shelly), Malika (Ellis), Adire, and Deonte (Krystan); his grandchildren: Marcellos, Joselly, Josiah, Armon, Don, Amika, Maia, Ian, Peyton, Deara, Dekia, Derrick, Daaiyah, Dylon, and Kylee; his great-grandchildren: Amaya, Hope, and Azeiyah. He is survived by his sister, Gwendolyn (Ervin) Green; “favorite” niece, Nini Green, nephew, Kedrick Green (Lisa), Ken(Je’Ton), Michael(Joshanda), and other nieces, nephews, cousins, and others who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Samuel, James, and Kennard Thompson.
In lieu of flowers; memorial donations can be made to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation Fund or the HBCU Foundation Fund.
