Obituary for Mary Louise Hyde

Mary Louise (Kern) Hyde of Ypsilanti, MI, age 92, peacefully returned to her maker on February 14, 2021. “Mary Lou” was born on June 23, 1928, daughter of Frank and Mary (Donohue) Kern. She grew up during the depression but was lucky to have a father who had a good steady job working as head mechanic for the Wilson Dairy (at half pay). They lived in a lovely home on Pennington Street near 6 mile and Livernois in the Jesu Parish. They had the home built in 1929, right before the onset of the Great Depression. Mary Lou graduated co-valedictorian from Immaculata High School in 1946– the other valedictorian was one of her best friends. After high school she went on to study at Marygrove College. She married Richard Quentin Hyde (who had the same birthday, born in the same hospital precisely 4 years before) during her junior year. Following her marriage, she switched to night classes and took a job as a laboratory technician at the Herman Kiefer Hospital. After the birth of her first child Robert in May of 1952, she returned to the University of Detroit to complete her Bachelor of Science degree by the end of the Summer. Mary Lou and Richard (a University of Detroit grad who later became a registered architect employed by General Motors) raised their 8 children in Warren, Michigan, as members of the St. Mark’s Catholic parish. She was a tremendous mother who, with her patience, indefatigable support, and invincible virtues, inspired her children to overcome all obstacles and pursue higher education in whichever field of study they should choose. Through the years Mary Lou and Richard loved to travel, vacationing and camping all around the country, visiting their children and grandchildren along the way. At home they enjoyed bridge playing matches with life-long friends. In 1988 they retired to South Lyon and joined the St. Joseph Catholic parish. A few years after the passing of Richard in 2006 she moved to Ypsilanti, taking residence at the Village at St Joe’s where she made many new dear friends.
Mary Lou is survived by her eight children and their spouses: Robert Q. Hyde, Ph.D. candidate (Beth Kolad); Susan Marie Hyde, M.S. (John Volpe); Roger Q. Hyde J.D. (Michele Wawrzyniak); Raymond Q. Hyde, D.V.M. (Hanina Hyde); Ronald Q. Hyde, Certificate of Art; Carol Ann Hyde J.D. (Sanjay Correa, Ph.D.); Richard Q. Hyde Jr., M.B.A. (Sherie Hyde); Donna Louise-Hyde Hoff, M.D. (Paul Hoff, M.D.). She is also survived by her grandchildren, all of whom have pursued (or are now pursuing) higher education: Dylan Kolad, Michael Hyde, John Hyde-Volpe, David Hyde-Volpe, Jessica Hyde, Rory Hyde, Hunter Hyde, Idina Koruz, Sarah Correa, Kiran Correa, Malini Correa, Patrick Hyde, Rachel Hyde, Lauren Hoff, and Kiersten Hoff. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law Yvonne (Hyde) McCarthy, and many nephews and nieces on both sides of the family. Mary Lou was predeceased by her siblings Betty (Kern) Crawford, Frank Kern, and Theresa (Kern) Crinnion.
The family would like to express a special thanks to all the caring staff at the independent living facility at St. Joseph’s Village (especially Krystal, Jay Jay, and Irene), to all the live-in caregivers provided by BrightStar Care (especially Jovana and Heather, who were there with us on her last day), and to all the kind staff of St. Joseph Mercy Home Care and Hospice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Home, 122 West Lake St. South Lyon, Michigan. Following a mass to be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church on February 19, 2021, at 11 a.m., she will be laid to rest alongside Richard in the Hyde Family plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, MI.
In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Father Solanus Casey’s Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1780 Mount Elliott St., Detroit, MI 48207 (solanuscenter.org/donate).
