Obituary for Karin Cecile Wolski

Karin Cecile Wolski, age 93 of South Lyon passed away at home with family on Wednesday September 4,2019.

Born September 7, 1925 in Berlin, Germany she was the youngest daughter of Kurt and Wera von Priesdorff. She celebrated over 70 years of marriage with her husband Robert J Wolski.

As a young woman living in Germany, Karin saw much of World War II from the back of a horse.
She began riding at the age of seven and won her first international dressage competition at the age of fourteen. She obtained her German FN Bronze and Silver medals in dressage, jumping and driving and earned the certification of Bereiter. She furthered her training by obtaining the German FN Instructor certification, a rigorous training program with both theoretical and practical riding exams. As soon as she received her instructor credentials she was immediately drafted into the Cavalry division of the German army. In Dresden she was commissioned as trainer to prepare horses for battle which entailed preparing the unbroken horses to carry Cavalry riders, train mounts to negotiate all types of cross country obstacles, ditches, banks, cross rivers and pull heavy artillery.

She left the base in 1945 and worked for the American Red Cross in Germany as translator. After marrying she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she was immediately sought after as an experienced horse trainer.

Her career included teaching riding, Voltige (gymnastics on horseback), training and competing. She worked for several years with her friend Violet Hopkins a founding member of the United States Dressage Federation in Windsor, Ontario.

In 1971 Karin moved with her family to Lyon Township where she built up her riding and training facility known as Tiergarten Farms. She introduced the sport of Voltige (vaulting) to Ontario, Canada and the Midwestern States of the US through numerous vaulting exhibitions and lectures.
She was instrumental in teaching instructors the sport which then grew more and more in popularity and now is accepted as an Olympic sport.

In 2000 she published "A Bilingual Wordbook for Horse People" an equestrian dictionary of horse terminology in both English and German.

Karin continued to ride, train and compete into her seventies and she continued to coach, give clinics and lectures into her eighties until she retired. In her retirement she continued to remain active and pursued her artistic talents. She enjoyed wood carving, drawing and painting.

Her volunteer work included being a founding member of the Tazwell Animal Shelter in Pekin, Illinois where she volunteered as animal rescuer and fund raiser. She also was very active in the Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Karin is survived by her husband Robert Joseph Wolski of South Lyon, her daughters Karin Lynn Wolski of New Hudson, Heidi Vern Stani-Wolski (Thomas Dwyer) of Portand, Oregon, Anette Monica Wolski of Westland and her grandson Dr Tristan Stani (Dr Joelle Karlick) of Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to her beloved son Dieter Wolfgang Wolski she is preceeded in death by her six sisters in Germany.
