Obituary for Cecilia K. Spalding

Cecilia Catherine Spalding was born on January 19, 1917 in a farmhouse located near Crofton, Nebraska. She was raised there along with her two brothers and four sisters with no electricity or indoor plumbing. For light they used kerosene lamps and gasoline mantle lights. They used an outhouse; a deep well for drinking water; and caught rainwater to use for washing clothes and dishes. The well was also used to keep foods like milk; butter; and some meats cold because refrigeration was not available. For heat, they used a pot belly stove . . . they had no furnace. School was in a two-room schoolhouse and ended with the eighth grade.

At the age of 21, she was off to Chicago where she worked for a doctor and his wife as a cook and nanny to their three-year-old daughter. Three years later, she moved out to Oakland, California where she went to business school. After finishing she took a job doing office work for a year and when World War II started, she moved to Seattle, Washington and took a job at the Boeing Aircraft Company, working in the payroll department. She worked at Boeing for four years. While there, she was literally swept off her feet at a USO dance by her future husband, Forrest Spalding.

After the war was over and Forrest was discharged, they were married and they moved to Detroit, Michigan. She became a home maker and raised five children. In 1984 they moved from Detroit to South Lyon and one year later Forrest passed away. To fill the void, she started going to the senior center where she met a lovely lady who talked her into taking classes to get her high school diploma. She completed the classes and at the age of 75, she received her diploma.

Cecilia was a remarkable woman. She drove until the age of 98 and lived on her own until almost age 100. She enjoyed playing cards; eating potato chips, cookies and hot dogs; and watching the Detroit Tigers play baseball on tv. She always wanted to live to the age of 100, and she certainly accomplished that goal, plus three more years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. It is hoped that everyone that knew her will carry on her legacy as they show kindness to one another.

Cecilia Spalding, age 103, passed away March 10, 2020. Cecilia is survived by her children: Janet (Charles) Marks, June (Calvin) Zimmerman and Dale (Deborah) Spalding; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Forrest L. Spalding (1985), daughter Anne Dagle (2017) and son Leo Spalding (2003). A memorial mass will take place at a later date.
